History of the School of Educationhistory

The School of Education of the Kyushu University was established in May 1949 as the Faculty of Law and Letters’ Education Course. Initially, it was established to train pedagogical researchers and educational leaders to build a new democratic society after World War II, and provide teaching courses to the entire University. With the subsequent changes in the world of education, we have always trained faculty members and students that are capable of playing an active role in the center of educational society.

A Brief Chronological History of the School of Education, Kyushu University (from “Fifty Year History of the Faculty of Education, Kyushu University” published in 2000)

1925 May
The Educational course was established in the Faculty of Law and Letters of Kyushu Imperial University. Professor Taigan Matsunami was in charge of the course, a position he held until 1943.
1949 May
Kyushu University Faculty of Education was established in accordance with the promulgation of the National School Establishment Law).
1949 October
The Third Institute for Educational Leadership (IFEL) was established.
1950 February
Ryusho Hikata, the Dean of the Faculty of Letters, assumed the post of Dean of the School of Education.
1950 April
The first Educational Psychology Course was established.
1951 March
The Kyushu University School of Education bylaws were established. Professor Masunori Hiratsuka and Lecturer Toshiyuki Hara were reassigned from the Faculty of Letters to the School of Education.
1951 April
The Educational History Course and the second Educational Psychology Course were established. Classes in the School of Education began.
1951 June
The first educational training with the participation of Kyushu University students was held.
1952 April
The Comparative Education course and Education Technology course were established.
1953 April
The educational Administration and Finance courses were established. The Association for Education and Medicine was formed and the Graduate School of Education was established. Additionally, the Founding Committee of the Research Institute of Comparative Education and the Cultural Research Center were established.
1953 May
Masunori Hiratsuka became the first Dean of the School of Education, according to the Election Regulations.
1954 April
The Sociology of Education course was established.
1954 July
The Faculty of Education was relocated to a new building (Hakozaki Koishimachi).
1955 July
The Research Institute of Comparative Education and Culture, which is attached to the School of Education, was established.
1957 March
the First Issue of “Research Bulletin, Research Institute of Comparative Education and Culture” was published
1957 April
The second department in the Research Institute of Comparative Education and Culture was established, and the Textbook Center moved from the second to the third floor.
1961 April
The Group Dynamics course was established.
1962 April
The Educational Guidance course was established.
1963
The course on Educational Technology was renamed Educational Methodology; Educational Administration and Finance was renamed Educational Administration.
1966 April
The Social Education course was established and the student enrollment capacity increased (from 25 to 35). The School of Education Alumni Association was also established.
1972 March
The Psychology Building was constructed.
1975 April
The Handicapped Children course was established and the student enrollment capacity increased (from 35 to 40). The first issue of “Research in Clinical Psychology” was published.
1978 April
Educational Administration and Comparative Education courses became experimental courses.
1981 April
The Psychological Education Consultation Room was approved by the Ministry of Education.
1982 April
The Psychological Education Consultation Room was approved by the government as a special facility.
1985 February
The teacher-training Curriculum Committee (University-wide) was established. (Currently, the Teacher-training Expert Committee is under the Education Planning Committee).
1986 April
The School of Education Affiliated Handicapped Children Clinical Center was established.
1987 April
The student enrollment capacity increased (from 40 to 50).
1988 March
Construction of the School of Education Affiliated Handicapped Children Clinical Center was completed.
1991 April
The student enrollment capacity increased (from 50 to 60).
1992 April
The Lifelong Development course was established.
1994 April
The Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology (Category II) started. The Social History of Education course (successor to the Educational History course) was also established.
1995 April
The Psychological Education Consultation Room merged with the Clinical Center for Handicapped Children to form the Center for Developmental Clinical Psychology. The student enrollment capacity was reduced (from 60 to 50).
1995 July
The International symposium was used to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Research Institute of Comparative Education and Culture.
1996 April
The Special Selection for Working Adults began in the Graduate School of Education.
1998 April
The Graduate Course on Human-Environment Studies was established.
2000 April
The Graduate School of Human-Environment Studies Affiliated Developmental Clinical Psychology Center was established.
2000
The Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies was established based on the graduate school system.
2015 April
The Educational Design Theory course was established.
2016 April
The Course on Educational Planning, Measurement, and Evaluation Theory was established.
2018 April
The Minor Program and the International course began.
2018 April
The student enrollment capacity was reduced (to 46).
2018
The Curriculum for Certified Psychologist Qualification started.
2018 October
Relocation to the Ito Campus.
